Key takeaways
Eye bag surgery case: long hours of screen use made his eye bags steadily more noticeable over three years. After an assessment with Dr. Yen-Chun Yu, surgery was done under local anesthesia, with pre-op discussion to avoid an unnaturally flat under-eye look. There was no bruising or pain afterward; the swelling went down in about three days, he went out wearing glasses on day four, and by the stitch removal on day seven he was fully recovered.

"I'm Wei, I'm 31, and I'm a web designer. About 3 years ago I noticed I had eye bags. I tried all sorts of things (concealer, eye masks, going to bed early and so on), but nothing worked. A friend had just had very successful eye bag surgery, so in the end I decided to have it too."
Work made my eye bags worse, and I set a surgery date within 2 months
I noticed my eye bags 3 years ago, and it's probably partly due to work, since I'm on a computer all day: long hours of eye strain plus work fatigue. Once the eye bags appeared, they kept getting more noticeable, and more and more friends told me I had eye bags, so I thought I'd get a consultation. I also wanted to look more awake, since I take photos fairly often, so in the end I chose eye bag surgery. From consultation to deciding on surgery took me only about 2 months!
Eye smile fold or eye bag? The secrets of eye bag surgery
Surgery under local anesthesia felt like having a tooth pulled, with zero pain
I wasn't very nervous on surgery day, because I'd heard it's only a minor procedure, and the doctor came across as very professional and skilled, so I felt reassured. I chose local anesthesia. The process felt a lot like having a tooth pulled: you feel the anesthetic injection, and then you feel the instruments and some tugging, but none of it hurts; you just feel someone tugging near your eye bags. It went quite quickly, because the doctor kept chatting with me.
Swelling gone in 3 days, recovered in 7: lightning-fast recovery
My recovery went smoothly, with only some swelling and no bruising or pain at all. The swelling was completely gone in about 3 days. On day four I could go out wearing glasses, and when I went back to have my stitches out on day 7, I was fully recovered. My friends said I seem well suited to surgery because I recover so fast, haha. A friend of mine had bloody fluid from the eyes after surgery and their eyes looked red, but I had none of that. I asked the doctor, who said it usually happens to people who are very nervous or under a lot of stress.
After surgery I drank the herbal recovery tonic, took vitamin C and went to bed early, so the swelling went down quite fast. During recovery the clinic messaged me to check how I was doing and whether I had any problems, and said I could tell them if anything felt off. I think they did that really well.
Dr. Yen-Chun Yu combines aesthetic sense with expertise
I chose NAISS CLINIC because I'd had laser treatments here before. The service is great and the environment feels upscale and comfortable. I also found Dr. Yu very professional. Eye bag surgery sounds simple, but explaining to a patient where the eye bags are, where the tear trough is and what the procedure involves is hard to do clearly. Dr. Yu explained it very clearly, and after hearing it I wasn't so worried. Also, Dr. Yu's views and aesthetic sense are very similar to mine. I think surgery requires good communication with your doctor and reaching agreement. I really recommend Dr. Yu!!
Very satisfied after surgery: no more concealer or photo editing
It's been 3 months since surgery, and I give it a 9. Friends say I look more awake, mainly because I think it looks very natural. I've seen many men after eye bag surgery whose under-eyes ended up too flat, like a porcelain doll, which looks fake. Before surgery I actually showed the doctor pictures of what I didn't want. Everyone else brings pictures of what they want; I'm the only one who brought what I didn't want, haha.
None of my friends or colleagues noticed I'd had eye bag surgery, but they all told me I seemed much more awake. The biggest benefit afterward is that I don't need to edit photos or use much concealer, which saves time and gets me out the door faster
Do it early and enjoy it sooner, and drop the stigma around men in aesthetics
For anyone considering surgery, the earlier the better, though I'd still suggest consulting and comparing widely. For doctors, start by looking at their cases and credentials. And to all men considering aesthetic treatments: I think it's completely normal for men to want to look good. Wanting to look better has nothing to do with gender. Men in Taiwan seem to have a bias against aesthetic medicine, but I think it's slowly been changing in recent years. When I used to go to aesthetic clinics, everyone I saw was a woman, but now it feels like there are more and more men. After my eye bag surgery, a close male friend of mine was inspired to go and have it too.
I think there are fewer male cases online for men considering aesthetic treatments, so men are more likely to end up with bad results. So I want to tell men: looking better has nothing to do with gender. Don't give up on looking your best because of what society thinks!
