You probably know this feeling! No matter how carefully you care for your face, once “it” gives itself away, your real age is exposed in an instant. People say that an extra ring of neck lines makes you look 3-5 years older. Is it really that dramatic? Yes! This article focuses on neck lines: how do they form, why can they reveal your age, and how should you care for them? Share it with the friends around you, then let's get into it!

How do neck lines form?

First, we need to define what a “young neck” is. The key to a young neck is “good skin”: few fine lines, firm skin, and good elasticity. Next, there are no so-called “platysmal bands” or “horizontal lines,” and finally, the neck looks “plump”. However, according to dermatologists, the neck begins to age gradually from the teenage years. The causes of aging fall roughly into the following types, so see how many of them apply to you:

Heads-down habits and poor posture (horizontal lines)

Since we started school as kids, habits like looking down to do homework, staring at the phone for long periods, using the computer, and watching shows in bed all compress the skin of the neck. Over a long period, this compression gradually makes the skin tissue stretch and contract, leading to deep neck lines.

Skin aging and collagen loss

This is something everyone goes through. Collagen and elastin begin to decline gradually after age 25. As the support of the face weakens, the face gradually sags, and faint lines (not fine lines) start to appear on the neck, making it look less plump, as if you could see the tissue beneath the skin. On top of that, daily sun exposure, UV radiation, and dry weather all speed up water loss, causing the skin to age and wrinkle.

Muscle aging

This refers to the vertical bands of the platysma, which appear after about age 45 or 46 in the center of the neck (commonly called “turkey neck”). These two bands look like two cords running up from below. The reason is that during aging, the platysma gradually thins and gathers toward the center.

Changes in skin texture

People today pay more and more attention to skincare, whether that means diligently removing makeup, caring for the skin, and wearing sunscreen at home, or getting monthly facial care such as HydraFacial and other treatments. But most people focus on the “face” and neglect the “neck,” so gaps and changes gradually appear. For example, when the neck is not moisturized enough, it gets drier and drier, and dryness easily leads to fine lines and wrinkles. These problems can be adjusted with simple aesthetic treatments, so there is no need to worry too much. Simple options include HydraFacial and lasers.

Fat buildup and obesity

This type of neck line may be present from birth or may develop later in life. Fat-type neck lines come from the buildup of “subcutaneous fat”, and among these, the double chin is something nobody wants. The older we get, the more fat builds up under the chin, and obesity also makes neck lines worse. Obesity above the platysma shows up as “horizontal lines” that can be even more obvious, and these are often seen in people with obesity. Even with liposuction, the improvement is not necessarily good! We still recommend healthy, natural improvement through weight loss and fat reduction. Of course, for faster results you can also choose lipolysis injections as a complement. If your budget allows, you can also use the energy of RF and ultrasound to eliminate fat while also helping lift and firm the skin

General care: how to improve neck lines

Besides the neck massage often seen online, you can also choose a “neck cream” among skincare products. These are developed specifically for the neck, and combined with massage, the results are even better!

Why choose a neck cream? Can't I just use regular lotion?

In fact, the tissue of the neck is slightly different from the skin of the face, with less fat, collagen, and sebaceous glands than the face, which is why the neck loses elasticity, sags, or develops lines more easily. Of course, you can extend your regular moisturizing to the neck, but if possible, we recommend choosing a “neck cream” for targeted care to provide what the neck really needs! (Diligent care will definitely pay off, so don't skip it.)

Aesthetic treatments for neck lines

1. Botulinum toxin

As mentioned in the first section, relaxing the platysma can improve the neck to a certain degree, making the overall line look smoother and longer. Injecting botulinum toxin helps relax tension, so the neck also gets an overall upward-lifted feel, making you look noticeably younger. The effects of botulinum toxin last 4-6 months. If you are new to aesthetic medicine and treating neck lines for the first time, you can start with botulinum toxin, and if you like the results, simply return on a regular schedule to top up the dose!

A reminder: most people want to treat “horizontal lines,” but we need to be upfront with you. Fully treating horizontal lines to complete improvement is almost impossible. At most you can reach 40-60% improvement, and the lines will come back with your daily habits, so we don't recommend having overly high expectations or overtreating. Overtreatment (such as overinjecting hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, Ellansé, and so on) may create a “pearl necklace” appearance and backfire.

2. RF (radiofrequency)

It can address skin laxity and fat concerns. RF is already quite effective for lifting, and its energy can also help break down fat. If your budget allows, you can treat the neck along with the face for a complete overall result!

3. Lasers

Lasers used on the face can also be used on the neck! For example, fractional lasers and picosecond lasers (though we don't recommend high energy). The epidermis and dermis of the neck are thinner than those of the face, and the neck also has fewer sweat glands and sebaceous glands than the face, so its tolerance for laser energy cannot be too high. In other words, “improving neck lines requires multiple low-energy laser treatments”. Laser treatment can also promote collagen production, so it is a big help in improving and preventing fine lines!

4. Retinoic acid, retinol, and retinal

These ingredients help improve the skin's turnover cycle, promote keratin renewal, and thicken the skin, so they are very common in dermatology clinics and are also excellent ingredients in aesthetic treatment! However, take special care when using them. The neck reacts more strongly than the face, so we recommend this approach for patients who already apply these ingredients on the face, or to try them on the face for a while first and then gradually move to the neck. You can use them together with a lotion and increase the frequency gradually. These vitamin A ingredients are also great for skin rejuvenation!
