As modern aesthetic standards rise, acceptance of liposuction keeps growing, and it has even become one of the top 5 most popular procedures in recent years. Yet many people who want it keep hesitating, because they have seen news reports of deaths from liposuction, or side effects such as uneven results and poor outcomes after surgery. For these doubts and fears, understanding the facts in advance and taking precautions can greatly reduce the risks.

5 Main Risks Behind Liposuction Deaths

According to research by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the rate of liposuction complications is about 0.25% and the mortality rate is 0.002%. Compared with many surgeries, the death rate for liposuction is actually not high. Below are several common causes, so you can actively prevent them when choosing a treatment and give yourself an extra layer of protection.

1. Anesthesia mishaps

Anesthesia comes as local anesthesia and general anesthesia, and anesthesia itself carries risks, such as improper handling, overdose or underdose, patient allergy to the anesthetic, or use of an unsuitable anesthetic. These can cause complications during surgery and lead to death from liposuction.

2. Removing too much fat

Excessive liposuction can cause too much fluid loss, electrolyte imbalance and even excessive blood loss. We recommend removing no more than 4,000 cc in a single session

3. Fat embolism

If instruments are handled improperly or force is applied incorrectly while removing fat, fat can enter the vascular system and affect the function of organs such as the heart and lungs, causing organ hypoxia or a drop in blood oxygen.

4. Accidental injury to organs

Surgery is performed only in the “fat layer,” but if the physician operates improperly or lacks skill, internal organs or tissues may be injured accidentally. Immediate death is likely only if the aorta or another major artery is injured, but consequences such as hemorrhagic shock or peritonitis caused by gastrointestinal perforation still need to be watched for

5. Wound infection

Although the wounds are small, you still need to watch out for the risk of “sepsis” caused by wound infection. When microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi invade the body, the immune system can become severely inflamed, causing symptoms such as fever, a rise or fall in white blood cell count, and shock, and leading to multiple organ failure and even death, one of the risks of liposuction.

Side Effects of Liposuction Surgery

1. Scarring

VASER wounds are only 0.2-0.5 cm and scars are unlikely to form. However, East Asians have more active melanocytes, so they are naturally prone to pigmentation, and people prone to keloids are more likely to be left with scars after surgery.

If scars do form, they can be treated with scar-removal laser. Keloid scars first need scar-reducing injections, followed by laser to remove melanin pigmentation.

2. Weight regain

Liposuction removes fat cells from the body and reduces the total number of fat cells, but if diet and lifestyle habits are not controlled afterward, the remaining fat cells in the body can still grow, creating a risk of weight regain. Conversely, with good diet and exercise management, results are more noticeable and weight regain is less likely.

3. Uneven skin

The most common side effects of liposuction include a bumpy or uneven surface and asymmetry between the two sides. They usually result from uneven force applied by the physician, poor judgment of how much fat to remove, or improper aftercare by the patient, such as not wearing the compression garment long enough.

4. Loose skin

Removing too much fat is not a good thing! It can have the opposite effect, leaving the area loose, shrunken and gaunt. This is especially true for the limbs, where the proper fat layer must be preserved, otherwise the legs and arms easily lose their natural beauty.

If a patient already has loose skin or poor elasticity before surgery, the physician needs to evaluate even more carefully and control the amount of fat removed.

What If Liposuction Fails?

First, don’t rush to assume your liposuction has failed!

Bruising, swelling and soreness after surgery are all normal and gradually fade within about 7-10 days. Full recovery takes about 3-6 months, and the recovery time can be longer or shorter depending on individual constitution and aftercare. If the condition has still not improved after this golden period, seek a professional physician’s evaluation to choose a suitable way to improve it. If you do not want a second surgery, other treatments can also be used to improve the appearance.

ApproachPurpose
Surgical revisionUses a second liposuction or a lift-and-trim procedure to correct the original uneven or loose skin
Fat graftingFills depressed or over-treated areas to restore a smooth surface
Device-assistedRF and ultrasound lifting to tighten loose skin
Picosecond laser to improve scar pigmentation

What Is the Key to Avoiding the Risk of Liposuction Death?

Two key points to watch: choice of equipment, and a professional physician and clinic

1. Choice of equipment

Traditional equipment scrapes fat out manually and then drains it with negative pressure. It involves more blood loss and more pain, requires general anesthesia, and therefore carries higher risk.

The latest VASER liposuction uses ultrasound to emulsify fat before draining it out of the body, with these advantages:

2. Physician / clinic

As the risks and side effects above show, the success or failure of liposuction mostly depends on the physician’s expertise and experience. NAISS CLINIC has a team of experienced plastic surgeons who analyze your needs from a professional perspective and give the most thorough evaluation, recommendations and treatment. The clinic’s operating room is a hospital-grade surgical operating room, and five-star post-operative care is provided so patients can have surgery with peace of mind!
