If you clicked on this article, you have probably already decided to go with implant breast augmentation but do not yet understand the differences among implant materials and types. Before answering that question, first decide what results you expect after breast augmentation. Some people want firm-looking breasts, some want a highly lifelike result, and some care most about how natural the breasts feel to the touch.

Sebbin, Mentor, Motiva, and Perle are all common breast implants on the market, but before choosing a brand, think about the final result you want. Once you have your answer, you will know which implant material suits you best.

Here is a quick overview of common breast augmentation materials, which fall into two main types: saline implants and silicone implants:

Saline Implants

A saline implant is a transparent silicone shell filled with sterile saline solution. It was the first breast implant material invented. The advantage is that if it ruptures, it does not harm the body. The drawbacks are a high leak rate, the risk of capsular contracture, and a look and feel that are relatively less natural, so almost no one chooses saline implants today.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are mainly divided by shape into "round" and "teardrop," and by surface into "smooth" and "textured."

Smooth vs. Textured Surfaces

The advantage of a smooth surface is greater mobility, with the softest and most natural feel and a bouncy sensation. The drawbacks are that it shifts easily and needs massage after surgery to prevent a capsule from forming, which in severe cases can displace the breast.

The advantage of a textured surface is a high degree of fit and a lower tendency to form a capsule, with no massage needed after surgery. However, because the material is relatively thicker, the feel is slightly worse than a smooth surface. Even so, because no post-op massage is needed, quite a few patients choose textured implants.

That said, thin people have thin skin and little breast tissue, so a textured implant can show through the skin and its outline becomes more noticeable. For them, a smooth surface is actually recommended. Overall, whichever shape you choose, the implants feel soft, look natural and attractive, do not seep or evaporate, do not affect breastfeeding, and can be used for large volumes, meeting the need to go up several cup sizes at once.

Common breast implant brands in Taiwan include Motiva, Sebbin, and Mentor.

Motiva

Pros

Motiva is filled 100% with no empty space and uses a textured shell, so once placed, the implant conforms closely to the skin with almost no wrinkling. It does not need frequent massage after surgery, has the lowest capsular contracture rate, and offers the highest safety.

Notably, Motiva implants change shape with gravity: standing, they take a natural teardrop shape that hangs down, and lying down, they spread out into a round disc shape, in line with ergonomic principles. In addition, the manufacturer offers a 10-year warranty, and if the implant ruptures or Grade 3-4 capsular contracture occurs during that period, it is replaced free of charge.

Cons

Because it is filled 100% with no empty space, it is less soft than smooth-surface materials, and compared with a real breast it feels a bit bouncier. It also holds multiple patents and comes with a 10-year manufacturer warranty, which makes it the most expensive.

Sebbin

Pros

Sebbin is an implant material developed in France that sits between smooth and textured surfaces. Its surface is a micro-textured round implant, which lowers the chance of capsular contracture. Sebbin is the softest of all, even softer than smooth-surface materials, and comes closest to the feel of a natural breast.

Cons

Although Sebbin has the best soft feel, people with thinner skin may not get enough fullness in the upper chest. There is no need to worry too much, though, because wrinkling can be solved with fat transfer to the breasts.

Mentor

Pros

Mentor has its greatest advantage in its accessible price. If softness matters to you, the feel of Mentor Classic (Smooth) falls between Sebbin and Motiva. If the capsular contracture rate matters to you, choose Mentor Classic (Textured) or the teardrop type, both of which have a lower capsular contracture rate than Sebbin. Mentor's affordable price meets the needs of the vast majority of people, which is why it is so popular on the market.

Mentor Classic (Smooth) suits people with sufficient breast tissue. It feels natural and soft, close to a real breast, and can create natural cleavage. The incision can be made through the armpit, the lower breast fold, or the areola, and the surgical scar is smaller than with the teardrop type.

Mentor Elegant (Teardrop) bonds tightly with body tissue, is unlikely to shift after surgery, has a low capsular contracture rate, and needs little massage. Whether you are lying flat or standing, it gives the most natural breast appearance, and the special teardrop design provides a smoother upper-chest curve. Mentor Elegant (Teardrop) comes in 169 sizes, so you can customize your ideal breast shape.

The latest Mentor Prestige (Queen Wave) uses innovative AI precision filling technology, combining a unique material with an improved fill ratio to create a more natural, fuller, three-dimensional breast shape. Even Asian women with small frames can easily have a full, Western-style bust and deep V cleavage. Mentor Prestige (Queen Wave) is certified by the US FDA, EU CE, and Taiwan TFDA, and comes with a lifetime peace-of-mind warranty program

Cons

Mentor Classic (Smooth) is not suitable for people with insufficient breast tissue or those who want to go up several cup sizes at once, because the skin becomes too tight and rippling easily occurs. In addition, although Mentor Classic (Smooth) is quite soft, it does not conform to the skin easily and needs frequent massage after surgery to prevent capsular contracture.

Mentor Elegant (Teardrop) feels firmer and bouncier, barely moves on the body, and makes it harder to create cleavage. It is also not suitable for people below a B cup. Compared with smooth implants, the teardrop type needs a larger incision and has a longer recovery.

Perle

The newest breast implant, launched in late 2023 – Perle, is a 100% filled gel silicone implant made by GC Aesthetics®, a British brand with a 40-year history. More than 3 million have been sold overseas, and netizens have nicknamed it "bubble tea." Perle uses high-quality materials and advanced technology for better results and more comfort. Perle comes in Moderate, High, and Extra High profiles based on volume and base width, with 38 sizes to choose from.

The surface layer uses BioQ technology, whose low surface roughness reduces inflammation and the capsular contracture rate, and it is also easier to place through the incision. The shell is a reinforced Ultra-link™ shell, a high-performance elastic gel layer with impact resistance of up to half a ton and elongation of 620%. Meanwhile, Emunomic™ dynamic mammary tissue gel gives a natural breast tissue contour both standing and lying down, with a 100% fill rate that reduces rippling after surgery.

PERLE™ offers an extremely safe "manufacturer lifetime warranty commitment." If the implant ruptures or Grade 3 or 4 capsular contracture occurs after placement, the manufacturer replaces the implant free of charge, and you do not need to worry about being unable to claim because the regional distributor has changed.

Implant rupture warranty: If an implant ruptures, the manufacturer replaces it free of charge.

Capsular contracture warranty: The implant is replaced free of charge when Baker Grade III or IV capsular contracture occurs.

BIA-ALCL (breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma): The implants are replaced free of charge, and surgery costs are compensated.

How to Choose Between Motiva, Sebbin, Mentor, and Perle? Which Suits Me?

Back to the original question: feel, bounciness and softness, shape, and capsular contracture rate are all factors in choosing an implant material.

If you want a natural breast contour, moderate softness, a low capsular contracture rate, and an affordable price, Mentor Elegant (Teardrop) is a good choice. If you want a natural, soft breast feel and natural cleavage, are willing to massage after surgery, and have a more limited budget, you can choose Mentor Classic (Smooth).

If you simply prefer a soft feel close to a real breast and are not concerned about the chance of capsular contracture, you can choose Sebbin. Note, however, that if you have little subcutaneous fat, rippling may appear after surgery, and you may need fat transfer to the breasts to solve the wrinkling.(Read more: Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation: Candidacy and Fat Survival)

If you cannot accept capsular contracture at all and are willing to lower your expectations for feel a little, but want high safety and a small incision, Motiva is the best choice, although it is the most expensive. Also, because Motiva is filled 100%, the outline of the round gel is a bit more noticeable.

Finally, if you are worried about capsular contracture and warranty coverage, Perle is the only choice, as GC Aesthetics® offers a lifetime manufacturer warranty.

Do Breast Implants Have a Lifespan?

Because implants feel soft and close to a real breast, many people favor them. But whether it is Motiva, Sebbin, or Mentor, any implant placed in the body will wear down to some extent over time, and if it ruptures or leaks, it must be replaced. Before choosing an implant material, be sure to discuss it with a professional surgeon and choose a material that is less prone to leaking, which boosts your confidence while keeping the procedure safe.

How Large Can Breast Implants Be (CC Volume)?

Chest Width Determines Size

You can use your chest (rib cage) width to choose a suitable cc volume. If your rib cage is small but you choose an oversized implant, the breasts will extend beyond the width of the chest after surgery, and the proportions will look unnatural.

Choosing the Right Implant Size

Before breast augmentation, we recommend discussing your ideal cup size with your surgeon and choosing a cc volume that suits your chest width. 3D simulation can also be used to estimate your size after surgery. Every implant brand on the market now offers 3-4 different profile heights, so you can choose according to your body shape and needs and create the breast shape that suits you best.

Where Can the Implant Be Placed in Breast Augmentation?
